The word Black in the United States used to be roughly analagous to dirty or when used in contrast to the word White when contrasting the differences between good(white) and Evil(Black). Black became "Beautiful" only by an exercise of pure will as exemplified in the statement:"I'm Black and I'm Beautiful." and so it became and still is. This great leap in consciousness arose during the Civil Rights era in the US, when Blacks arose en masse to change the meaning of that word: "Black" when describing an American Black.
