That first sentence is admittedly misleading. It's not that Lay Fung was accused of murder so much as Peruvian law dictates that any animal that kills a human must be sacrificed. However, as Alex Celi notes (ES), "Law 27596" makes an exception for dogs guarding their owners or property of their owners, which is why Lay Fung was ultimately set free.

Okay, I might sound out of touch, but an animal has been accused of murder? I never even thought animals could commit murder, since I’ve always thought murder was more of a human…activity. You can’t expect a trained watchdog to stop itself from pouncing on a prowler and to think of the consequences of its actions first before making the leap, or think about the nature of right and wrong or what is just or cruel. *scratches head*
