Education officials of the Philippines decided to pull-out modules on sex education after the powerful Catholic Church opposed the teaching of sex in schools.
The Philippines has a high population growth rate. Studies from the academe also point out that teens are becoming sexually active at earlier years. The Philippines is also the only Catholic-dominated country in Asia.
Despite the resistance from Church hierarchy, education officials want to continue distributing sex education modules in public schools this year. They agree to temporarily remove the modules to consult more people, including religious leaders, on how to teach the delicate subject to students.
Meanwhile, Senator Pia Cayetano defended the teaching of reproductive health in schools saying this promotes the “general well-being and health of the people.”
Buwahyahman described the Church opposition to sex education as “a kind of medieval thinking that promotes ignorance rather than enlightenment.”
Bishop Oscar Cruz in his blog, Viewpoints, recommended the following:
“Sex education especially with its human dimension and moral consideration are better left to the parents of the students—the father and the mother themselves giving formational sex education to their boy and girl children respectively.”
Sex education is also a topic in the government’s forum section in its official website.

we are currently having a debate in our school whether or not to implement sex eduacation in the ELEMENTARY level. let me just set my parameters here. i’m talking about grade 5-6 pupils learning about sex education.we got the affirmative side, and i’m glad we did.
teaching sex education in elementary level does not mean that we are teaching them to have sex, but we are preparing them for the real concept of the future. as statistics show, many youths today have done it(sex)and that’s no longer new to us. many youths today suffer from teenage pregnancy, of early parenthood, of HIV/AIDS, many other predicaments.
implementing sex education in the Philippines will not only benefit those who are under it, but also our Third World country as well. what’s the use of an inefficcient citizen, doing nothing for the good of the country?
if we introduce SEX EDUCATION in the elementary level, we are saving these young blood from the scary concept of teenage pregnancy, early parenthood and of HIV/AIDS.
nevertheless, PREVENTION IS ALWAYS BETTER THAN CURE. .
Im ad a nursing student .. regarding about todays generation …. As we can observe being individuals in the community we can easily see how devastating ” premarital sex is” Hence.. it destroys dreams and goals, Moreover it also destroys families and most importantly the dignity of ” Mga Dalagang Filipina”…
As view with the different scenes in the community.. especially with the young people.. It is very important for us to know about the This so ecalled ” you know”
In the sense that It is a part of the cycle called life”

Comment only, the Philippines is not the only predominantly Catholic country in Asia, in fact, it is only second to Timor Leste.
Its no secret that as soon as a child reaches puberty stage and go through physiological changes, the concept of sex could hover on an adolescents mind and in some cases even much earlier due to influences internally in the family or externally. I think turning down sex education on students as early as possible proves to be a costly move that could spell the difference between a healthy infant and one with deformities due to abortion attempts for its an unwanted pregnancy . Knowing the consequences of sex could help an early teen have better decisions towards sex.
