1. Not everyone in the Jewish world (let alone the American sphere) thinks Matisyahu is "all that." Some folks think his act, with the Lubavitch getup, is as much about the novelty of his appearance (certainly to non-Jews), though his lyrics do have ties to Jewish texts and Hasidic theolology.

2. If Brian Wilson demands a sandbox to sit in while playing Pet Sounds, who are we to question? Flaming Lips puts crazy stuff on their stage. Matisyahu has certain requirements too. His particular religious affinity puts a restriction on hearing the female voice, as it could lead to improper acts or thoughts on the part of men, so its a classic talmudic fence around around the fence around the law. I'm sure the idea of Madonna specifically would present other issues entirely. It isn't a mysognistic concept (in theory).

3. Lili, your insinuiation above is insulting, demeaning and brings the conversation low. Shame on you. Why it wasn't moderated in accordnace with the terms below, one can only speculate.

4. There area a couple of conscious Muslim rappers in circulation now, and that's worth noting. I haven't yet seen a huge star emerge yet but I don't think its impossible. As a Jew, I for one would welcome the idea of a Muslim-yahu. And for all intents and purposes, I see no reason why the two couldn't share a stage. In fact, I believe Matis did appear in a Jewish-Muslim joint concert in Brooklyn a few years back.

5. Thanks for the link Farah.

first of all thanks Farah for all this beautiful work...keeping us informed about what happens in the blogma.

Lili got the point. I'm not talking about the success itself even if there is a big difference between international (not only USA) and local (I mean islmaic world) success...but I wanted to show the hypocrisy of media who change attitude depending on who's in the picture.

You talked about money, yes I completly agree with you but do you think realy that in the case of islam money is useless since the world think that is a freedom handicap...Moreover even in the islamic world we'll find many people who are indignant owing to the fact that a muslim singer first wear a turban then doesn't allow any femal to share the scene with him

that's why "muslim" investors prefer to invest in something with no risk of faillure : bah bah bah and oua oua oua...

have a nice day :)

Hi
I think that the main point slix meant to point out while talking about matisyahu wasn't the success he's enjoying itself but the reaction of people who accept the fact that he doesn't want women on the scene (Shakira and Madonna proposed to sing with him but as he wants no women on the scene he didn't accept), and the media reaction about that is really amazing: they talk very discreetly about it.. So Slix wonder if a muslim who would have imposed such condition (no women on scene) would have been in peace?.. And as I said on his blog, if it was a muslim guy who restricted the scene access, we would have witnessed so many conferences talking about the (muslim misogyny etc etc...) , but the media seem to be very careful while talking about jews ;) for the reason we all know ;)
