Cool sensible post. Am a Rushdie fan for his linguistics. His politics and personal life need much to be desired. This has to nothing to do with my having been born into a Muslim household; so was Salman.

My own view on this appears in http://www.kidvai.com/zak/jottings.html

Re: http://www.sorrynorwaydenmark.com/advancedguestbook/index.php

RE: WE ARE SORRY

Those "young youthful Arabs" in disguise made a suggestion that a few violent ones should not speak for or be representative of the whole, yet they themselves are apologizing on behalf of the entire Arab population.

They too are trying to generate a loud sensational noise and how very hypocritical!

Now is the high time that sanity should prevail in all the camps and violence must be avoided at all costs. Violence and riots will only aggravate the problem. No one in his/her right mind can deny that the publication of cartoons was callous and needless.

Peace and love.

An interesting side note to this whole controversy comes from the Guardian Unlimited (dated Feb 06, 06):

"Jyllands-Posten, the Danish newspaper that first published the cartoons of the prophet Muhammad that have caused a storm of protest throughout the Islamic world, refused to run drawings lampooning Jesus Christ, it has emerged today.

The Danish daily turned down the cartoons of Christ three years ago, on the grounds that they could be offensive to readers and were not funny."

It is actually the media which intially started the fiasco and now has feuled the hunger for a reaction by the Muslim world.

I think we as Muslims should not react by threats or burning buildings, it just makes the matter worse. But how can you prevent an religiously charged nation when you have attacked (by you I mean the eurpoean media) one of its own religious symoblic idols - Prophet Muhammed (PBUH), its like hitting below the belt (& very hard)
