Christian Garbis reports that Armenia's free internet (limited to Armenian sites only) and email service, Freenet.am, is in danger of shutting down unless it finds new funding.

    Freenet.am’s free dialup service already is not free, because of per minute telephone call charges by Armentel.
    Yes, user not paying for service, but user have to pay for telephone call 9 drams per minute. (or 5 drams if limit of 1600 minutes/month not reached).

    Yes, there is special per minute rate for “Internet dialup calls” exists in Armentel tariffs, BUT (!) freenet’s dialup number does NOT recognized as “ISP dialup pool” number, that’s why user have to pay for it as usual voice call tariffs.

    So Freenet’s dialup service already are NOT free, and costs MORE than commercial ISP’s dialup services costs, which is about 2-3 drams/minute + Armentel’s per minute charge 1 dram for Internet dialup call.
