This is right. The 8th star would be for the Guyana province that did not join the independence discussions as too remote and too backward then. Bolivar discussed adding the 8th star but was dissauded to do so.

But Chavez is of course much better than Bolivar and he does have a monochromatic national assembly, a luxury that a more democratic minded Bolivar never had, nor would he have accepted. Then again Bolivar was a genious. Some of his self proclaimed heirs are not.

You are right, Georgia. Today, I have seen the same mistake in three English language blogs (one of them written by a Venezuelan), the star represents Venezuelan colonial province Guayana not the Esequibo region that is part of neighbor country Guyana, although Venezuela has claimed such territory since the 19th century when it was Great Britain colony.

Anyway, it is shame that the National assembly wasted time adding stars to the flag, and changing the way horses look around.

Sr. Mora y Leon needs to read his sources a bit more closely, I think.

In his post, he writes that the eighth star Chavez proposes to place on the Venezuelan flag represents the portion of Guyana (the country) claimed by Venezuela.

The source to which he links, however(http://english.eluniversal.com/2006/01/18/en_pol_art_18A657083.shtml), states that the eighth star is supposed to represent the Venezuelan province of GUAYANA.
