Nigeria: Biafra

Nigeria

Chippla's Weblog contributes to the Nigerian blogsphere debate on the present Biafran movement for a separate state within Nigeria…..Those calling for the creation of a State of Biafra in the 21st century happen to be misguided. They seem to be inward looking and fail to realize that the world has been significantly reshaped since 1960. Nations can no longer rely on the export of raw materials for their survival and innovation is the key in the cat-and-mouse game of global capitalism. Bonsai nation states have little role to play in this game, except they choose to be controlled by more powerful neighbors or allies. Were Biafra to be created it would be equivalent in size to Benin Republic a tiny African nation, though richer in terms of natural and human resources”

You might be right in expressing a lobe-sided opinion about the clamor for Biafran seccession. I am a biafran and i stillbelieve in the Biafran dream. If you know the origin of this stalemate, you might not be saying what you just did. The British amalgamation of the Northern and Southern Protectorate in 1914 was not to the interest of the people – they had intensions not inclusive of the people. Then they delineated the african (Biafran) religion as obsolete, fetish and pagan. Yet we stood there.

I still call for the state of Biafra because the likes of you have not gone to the Niger Delta. Maybe you the glazed roads of Zamfara are appealing to your site whereas the wells that bring forth the riches have impassable roads, no light or good water. What do you think of that? Tell me where is the justification for staying with Nigerian entity? tell me where does our future lie? I think there is need for change. The old way has not worked, so change is necessary.

  • It is indeed true that the people of the Niger Delta region have continued to live in straited circumstances over the years and that successive governments have exhibited lack lustre attitude to their plights. I make bold to say that the non challance of both the civilian and military leadership to the daily sufferings of the people whose land produce the wealth is totally wrong. So also their call for separate entity may be right but not justified. Really, I feel for you guys and I am with you in spirit but I dont support the idea of cessation, its not going to work out. At least not now and not under the present circumstances. Lets just hope for divine intervention, when this happens you either have your way without bloodshed or we have a listening and caring government that will make you smile.

Massob members championing the cause of Biafra at this time are largely not sincere in my opinion. I am completely an ibo man, without prejudice Massob members are only trying to cash in on popular old cheap sentiments to exploit, deceive and mislead the ibo nation .

  • The truth is that the founding fathers of this country(Nigeria)contributed to the continiuous agitation for the cessation.Though the almagamation of Northern and Southern proctorate was done without considering the Political,Cultural,Religious …of the tribes/ethnic groups, these are not the problem. The problem is that the little squabble between Zik and Awo group during their NCNC period led to this ugly situation and people have forgetton that and this has degenerated to an extent it is today (hatred among the different ethnic group) Each group abusing the other without reason just because his parents told him/her to beware of the other ethnic group go to Government offices even in the political enviroment. The only solution the Nigerian problem is cessation where there is no love within a group the best thing is for the to stay apart till they understand the importance of staying together as one. Therefore i support the fight for us to correct our wrong impression created among us by our founding fathers.
