Bangladesh textile sales to EU, U.S. up
DHAKA, Bangladesh, Oct. 14 (UPI) — European and North American buyers are shifting their textile purchases from China to Bangladesh, Xinhua reported Friday.
Knitwear export registered a 169-percent growth “during the first six months of 2005 in the quota-free regime” compared to the corresponding period of the last year, Bangladesh officials said.
A significant portion of Bangladesh’s increasing exports are coming at China’s expense.
“In last couple of months, we received a number of orders from some (EU) and U.S. buyers who earlier contacted Chinese exporters,” Fazlul Haque, president of Bangladesh Knitwear Manufacturers and Exporters’ Association, said.
More such increases are expected, he added.
“Apparel export of Bangladesh will increase further due to United States’ recent restrictions imposed on Chinese textile export,” said Annisul Haque, president of Bangladesh Garment Manufacturers and Exporters’ Association.
