<description>The official National Day for Malaysia is August 31, and this day has been observed as such since 1957 when Malaya gained independence from the British. September 16, 1963 was the day Singapore, Sabah aned Sarawak joined the enlarged Malaya to form Malaysia (As history had it, Singapore withdrew and declared itself an independent country on August 9, 1965). You should have given the complete context as your comment is misleading.
