Last year Ethan Zuckerman was sceptical about Live 8 and apparently in the minority. A year on, the Telegraph reconsiders the legacy of the big event and Richard Dowden, the director of the Royal African Society, was quoted as saying:Economic

[...] I don’t mean to make this transition sound like fait acomplit. For Africans to find their voices online, there’s an enormous digital divide to close. And it’s not just one divide - it’s a set of divides: electrification, telecommunications, literacy. And it’s not enough for Africa to speak up, through blogs, podcasts, videos, photos - the North has to learn to listen up as well. We’re so used to not hearing from Africa that it’s a surprise and a shock when Africans speak up about their own issues, as so many did around the Live8 concerts. [...]

[...] Advocacy changes when the people being represented demand to represent themselves. I had a ringside seat for an example of this during the Live8 concert series last summer. Armed with a series of rock concerts and a logo representing the African continent as an electric guitar, Bob Geldolf and friends pledged to influence G8 policy on Africa. Technorati sprang into action, aggregating blog posts tagged “live8″. Many of these posts were from Africans blogging about the concerts, and many of those posts were highly skeptical about the value of the Live 8 concerts. [...]

Hello there, I am from Mali living in Japan.

Personally I support Live8 and all the thoughts behind this event.
However the main problem in Africa is corruption.
And this problem is not solved with liveAid or other events.
This event might even not be recoginzed in Africa itself. Which is very sad.

If you ever have the change to go to Africa, take it. You will see that we take
things very slowly and see the world with different eyes as westeners do.

Africa will be a continent one time but it needs its OWN time.

LIVE8 was indeed a great event for a just cause. I particularly appreciated the declaration of 'interdependece' concept presented by Will Smith, as I also believe that this world needs more people who don't think from within the limited confines of their own little worlds (like 'wake up' - very small world for this person !!). People should realize that we all share the responsibility of living on this planet mutually, and we must care for it and be mindful of each other as such. It is not about artifical borders or perceived differences, and the more we rid ourselves of these constructs the easier it will be to start really helping each other. Of course a single event like LIVE8 will not be a quick fix to anything, however the act of creating a popular and very widespread movement in support of a just cause - like ending poverty - is in itself a very positive step. People need reminders, and this type of 'grand' event makes a lasting impression. Something to think about, when you think about 3-seconds passing !!! -snap-
