Ms MacKinnon,

Thank you for helping us MONKEYS live much "freer" lives. For that, you have my eternal gratitude. I say that from the bottom my heart. Where would all them Chinese bloggers be without your helpful instructions?

Thank you for reinventing the wheel for us and them. Now we, the ordinary yellow folk, and them, the Chinese bloggers, are much "freer" because we have much more access to and in posting tons of good stuff.

We were really helpless before we came across your article, IN ENGLISH, about how to hack CHINESE MSN spaces.

While we are eternally grateful to you and all them kind people here in GVO, commenters and authors alike, it remains a bit perplexing to us monkeys as to why this article was published IN ENGLISH in the first place or at all?

If it was meant to solicit the assistance of well meaning folks, especially those who are so quick to express their colorful opinions of us monkeys and our country Monkeyland, from the whole of the Anglosphere, we really appreciate the kind gesture from the bottom of our hearts. Although it is a bit paternalistic (in your case, maternal), we appreciate it nonetheless.

After all, isn't this the typical approach that a lot of Anglos (see all the comments above and more to come below) take when it comes to us monkeys. Are there any monkeys in the house that can second this sentiment?

Oh, if the reason why this article was in ENGLISH in the first place is just to point out one more flaw with China to all them people in the Angloshpere, I can only this reason and motive is SO DAMN LAME. Are there any monkeys in the house that can second this sentiment?

Yours truely

That's pretty bad that the Chinese government restricts websites and material... I guess with all the revenue that the United States brings them, they will never drop communism. Pretty sad.

I wonder what the foreign company reps think about having their internet access restricted to this extent while working in China. Recently I wrote a blog entry http://www.kuffodog.com/blog/?p=42 that calls for a massive cyber-couter attack on China. Their internet space should be flooding with the very information they are keeping out!

Great job on this article!!!

Now all we need is an army of hackers who will heed the call!!

Re: Well, America does have its flaws, but it’s the best country there is. Like Vorok says, we can go burn our own flag. We can defile the symbol of our very right to burn a flag. Vorok is right, we are lucky to be in a country where we can criticize each other, or our own government. Be thankful WE don’t have to download patches, and jump through hoops to say DEMOCRACY or FREEDOM.

the rest of the world looks on this sort of arrogance/ignorance with a touch of sadness. america is not some special case, and did not invent democracy or free speech or have some special ownership of it. just under half the country of the world, and just under half the world's population, are democracies, many as good as the states or better. europe's countries should be obvious cases here. in very few do candidates have to raise huge amounts of money (in many countries election advertising is paid for by the government). compulsory voting systems in other countries give a wider (and more 'truthful') expression of the will of the people in the shape of their government. and the washington lobby movement, the "anonymous" slander campaigns against john kerry, and post-florida judicial rulings against gore, are also worrying to many who love democracy around the world.

the best approach is to look at the flaws in your own country (wherever you are), help others humbly, educate yourself the best you can about others, and try to avoid nationalism.

I think that's its legal to enter "profanity" such as democracy on the Hong Kong websites too, is that true? And I also learnt that recently, 50 people had been jailed for using democracy and such on their blogs. I mean, if you really want to, you can, but I don't really suggest it. Go to Hong Kong or Taiwan to do it.

I can't tell you how much it sucks to try to teach history and geography to high school kids in this country when even Wikipedia is blocked. The regime would rather keep its people stupid than to be individual, critical thinkers. In fact, the official reason why its subjects are forbidden to vote is that they're just too stupid to understand how to do it correctly, but any idiot can drive...

Hey hey, if the right to burn your own flag is the measure of a country, in Canada we could burn our flag too... but who the heck would waste perfectly good matches on a Canadian flag hehe.
