Hundreds of thousands of pilgrims from all around the world landed on Rome to participate in religious ceremonies for the beautification of Pope John Paul II, known as “JP2”, declared “Blessed” on May 1st by his successor, Benedict XVI, in the presence of official delegations from 87 countries and 2300 journalists. In Africa, where an estimated 150 million Catholics live, what stirred a controversy is the attendance of some African presidents and bloggers were particularly shocked by the presence of President Robert Mugabe of Zimbabwe.

January 17, 2011 marked the 50th anniversary of the assassination of Patrice Lumumba, the first prime minister of the DR of Congo, formerly known as Zaïre. The Congolese people and its diaspora organised a few events but many thought that the celebrations were not up to par with the historical aura of one of the true hero of the independence of the DR of Congo.

D.R. of Congo: Okapi Radio, Winner of “Free Media Pioneer” Awards

The International Press Insitute (IPI) has granted Okapi Radio, the UN Radio in D.R. of Congo, with a "Free Media Pioneer" Award. The radio has been broadcasting since February 2002 to contribute to the peace-building process in DRC.
