Serbia: Bloggers Discuss Plans to Erect Monument to Late Azeri President

One of Belgrade's nicest parks has recently got renovated - thanks, partially, to a donation of 2 million euros by the Azerbaijani government. The news that has been stirring controversy these past few weeks among Serbian bloggers is the condition for this gift: in return for the donation, a monument to Heydar Aliyev, the former president of Azerbaijan, will have to be erected in the park.

Azerbaijan: Novruz Bayramı

Novruz, a holiday celebrated in Iran, Afghanistan and other countries, was once again also observed in Azerbaijan on 21 March although festivities started weeks before. This year was no different, and Peace Corps Volunteers (PCVs) in the former Soviet republic once again commented on the event.

Azerbaijan: Chaos as Riot Police Intervene in 2 April Protest

Following a Twitter campaign by Amnesty International calling for the release of imprisoned journalist Eynulla Fatullayev, the international human rights watchdog has launched another in support of a young Facebook activist in Azerbaijan who was jailed in May. The earlier action was followed by Fatullayev's release just days later and the organization hopes that the same will be true for Jabbar Savalan. More details of the online action which will coincide with the 20th anniversary of the country's independence from the former Soviet Union can be found here.
