Lingua project Global Voices in Malagasy has just published its 5,000th post. The project was started on September 12, 2007 and was one of the first African lingua project. There are currently 16 active Malagasy translators, among them is one of the youngest Global Voices translator, 16-year-old Radifera Felana Candy.

The Nigerian State Security Service (SSS) on Sunday arrested popular blogger Ikenna Ellis Ezenekwe (ukpakareports.com) for allegedly attempting to blackmail Mrs. Uche Ekwunife, a House of Representatives member representing Aniocha, Njikoka and Dunukofa Constituency in Anambra State.

Egypt: Kareem Amer's Sentence Ends on November 5

November 5 marks the end of Egyptian blogger Kareem Amer's or Kareem Nabil Sulaiman four year prison term. “We have reasons to believe that Kareem may not be released on this date. We also fear that he might be tortured nearing the date of his release,” says the Free Kareem blog. Kareem has been sentenced to four years in prison for insulting Islam and Egyptian president Hosni Mubarak on his blog.

Bahrain: Free Blogger Ali Abdulemam

Bahraini blogger Ali Abdulemam was arrested almost a month ago. He has been held in solitary detention since then. His legal status remains unclear as no lawyer has seen him, and the authorities do not provide any details on the exact charges that him, according to the Free Blogger Ali Abdulemam blog.

Azerbaijan: Obama calls for bloggers’ release

Dönməzlik blog [AZ] says that it was surprised to discover that US President Barack Obama raised the issue of Adnan Hajizade and Emin Milli, two video blogging youth activists imprisoned on charges of hooliganism by a court in Baku, with his Azerbaijani counterpart, Ilham Aliyev, at the UN General Assembly. The blog says that after international institutions and US Secretary State Hillary Clinton, Obama is now the must senior figure to call for the bloggers’ release. It concludes that if not them, then who can influence matters? God, perhaps?

Azerbaijan: Imprisoned video blogging youth activists remembered

Support Adnan and Emin remembers the plight of Adnan Hajizade and Emin Milli, two video blogging youth activists who were detained a year ago tomorrow in Baku, Azerbaijan. Eventually sentenced to 2 and 2.5 years in prison, Amnesty International considers the two men to be prisoners of conscience while other organizations such as the Presidency of the European Union, Parliamentary Assembly of the Council of Europe (PACE), Organization for Security and Cooperation in Europe (OSCE), Human Rights Watch and Reporters Without Borders have condemned the verdict. The blog hopes that other bloggers worldwide will mark tomorrow's anniversary by placing banners or making posts on their sites.
