As the birthday of the President of Azerbaijan, Ilham Aliyev, approaches, the Önər Blog [AZ] reminds readers of how residents in the country's second largest city of Ganja marked it last year. The blog sarcastically says that while the city is indeed famous for its giant pastries, baking a 48-metre long cake to celebrate the president's 48th birthday was perhaps a little too sycophantic when there are still significant problems such as a lack of constant drinking water.

The Önər Blog [AZ] comments on claims in Azerbaijan that Wikileaks cables painting the country in a bad light are the work of Armenians. In fact, the blog notes, at the same time as the media in Azerbaijan highlights the poverty, corruption and human rights abuses in its neighbor, how could Armenia be such a mighty nation? Jafarova's blog [AZ] comments on the results of yesterday's parliamentary elections held in Azerbaijan which saw the ruling YAP party consolidate its grip on power in the oil-rich former Soviet republic. Considering the parliament as simply a body to rubber stamp decisions from the President's Office, the blog says that while it expected fraudulent practices to define this election as much as previous ones, it was surprised to witness the government resorting to less than sophisticated measures to do so, terming the country YAPistan.

The Önər Blog [AZ] comments on calls by the Iranian Ambassador in Azerbaijan, as well as some religious citizens, to close down the ALMA newspaper after it was critical of the prophet Muhammad. The blog says that religion runs counter to democracy and freedom of expression, especially in a secular country.

A campaign represented as being organized by ‘Armenian bloggers' has been established to demand the return of the body of Manvel Sarinbekyan, an Armenian who reportedly hung himself while in detention after crossing the border with Azerbaijan.The campaign has been launched in both Russian and English. Meanwhile, and as the conflict between the two countries over the disputed territory of Nagorno Karabakh continues to claim lives despite a 1994 ceasefire, some Azerbaijanis are also demanding the return of the bodies of two dead soldiers held by the Armenian side. Campaigns and support groups demanding the return of one, Mübariz İbrahimov, are particularly present on social networking site Facebook as well as blogs and forums, but actual involvement by online users and bloggers in both countries appears to constitute a minority.
